The History of Black Friday

American in origin, Black Friday has taken the world by storm.
The term is believed to have been originated in the 1960’s with Philadelphian police officers using the term to explain the large number of suburban tourists that flocked into the city to begin their holiday shopping.
Police officers called it Black Friday due to the traffic and retail chaos that occurred the day after Thanksgiving.

The term did not seem to stick and be well known until the 1980’s where retailers started to spread the narrative that Black Friday was the day from which they went from red to the black in the books. This ploy helped the phrase stick and now Black Friday is a global sales period and in some cases can exceed the sales made on Boxing Day.
