The term is believed to have been originated in the 1960’s with Philadelphian police officers using the term to explain the large number of suburban tourists that flocked into the city to begin their holiday shopping. As many of your know we are based in Melbourne, and nothing screams more ‘Melbourne’ than the spring racing season. For those who don’t know, the spring racing carnival is run from august through to November with various group 1 races such as the Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup and most famously, The Melbourne Cup.
